I thought this stuff would make me healthier, but it didn’t seem to do much

I have an undying affection for vinegar. My father instilled in me the belief that malt vinegar, not ketchup, is the proper condiment for french fries. One time, my closest friend and I ate so many potato chips seasoned with salt and vinegar that it really burned a hole in her face. My home cabinet contains roughly four varieties of vinegar. It’s a fixation.

Furthermore, I believed that my fixation with apple cider vinegar could improve my health, considering its purported advantages.

Consuming apple cider vinegar is said to help with digestion, appetite suppression, and acid reflux problems—of which I have—though I mostly use it to make salad dressings and face masks.

So I decided to take a shot every day for breakfast for a week. I’d done this once or twice before, so I sort of knew what to expect. But ingesting it religiously, I had been assured, would alter my eating habits, clear my skin, make me invincible to bear attacks, and essentially change my life for the better.

Day one, I excitedly distributed my shot

For best effects, the internet suggests consuming two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar in the morning. At six in the morning, my mind was not too clear, so I chose to take a spoonful at a time instead of measuring them both into a shot glass.

This turned out to be a bad decision because I had to wait for the flavor to settle before taking a second scoop and washing it down with a glass of cold water. The worst thing I could have done was this.

Apple cider vinegar tastes fascinating if you haven’t tried it. I can eat pickles and drench salads in red wine vinegar, but sipping it on its own is a quite other matter. It tastes like five thousand delicious Sweet Tarts.

I decided, for the benefit of my palate, to sully a shot glass for the remainder of the week after gaging a little. When my partner leaned in and smelled the vinegar on my breath, he understood why my shot glasses with cat themes were stacked up in the morning.

Not much changed in terms of how I felt about it.

Because of my acid reflux, I anticipated that this shot would make me feel horrible and nauseous. However, this was just the case on the first day. It had only one other significant effect.

I was always going to starve.

This isn’t entirely out of the ordinary. It’s not like I always overindulge—I follow Weight Watchers. But during this experiment, I experienced the worst food cravings for some reason. For some strange reason, I wanted hot chocolate with red wine and fries. I also wanted pita bread. I don’t normally have a craving for nutritious food, but today I felt like overindulging.

With the exception of some sweet potato fries, I didn’t wind up eating these items, but I did notice that I was reaching for snacks more frequently and a little earlier in the day. This is strange because I’ve always heard that you can use apple cider vinegar to reduce your hunger.

As it happens, that is only partially accurate. According to experts who spoke with CNN, vinegar can cause nausea and decrease appetite. It appears that my love of vinegar is the reason I want to eat more of it. Oops!

In the end, it had no discernible effect on my acid reflux. To be honest, other than a sour sensation in the back of my throat for a few hours in the morning, I didn’t really notice much of a difference when taking these shots.

This made me reflect on how we see health.

Although there are numerous applications for apple cider vinegar and some shaky evidence of its potential health benefits, is it really worth taking a shot of it first thing in the morning? Not for me, anyway. Unfortunately, I didn’t realize it until a few days had passed after my trial. Originally, I had planned to do this experiment for a week, but I decided to extend it to ten days to see if there was anything I may be doing incorrectly.

The problem was that it seemed well. I had the impression that I was taking on a somewhat challenging task that would ultimately result in my long-term health. It appeared to be a sensible shortcut.

If you’ve ever tried to lose weight or monitor what you eat, you know that there are many people who will take advantage of you by promising to make you “healthy” with minimal effort. They’ll guarantee that if you eat as many avocados as you can, you’ll have radiant skin. Or that you’ll be as fit as a weightlifter if you only buy some absurd health product.

Is it truly healthy if all we’re doing is attempting to throw up instead of eating in moderation and exercising as much as we can?

 

I am all for small steps that make people feel better, but this one seems as if it’s not for me. I will continue to love vinegar more than most human beings, but it will strictly be reserved for Italian subs and french fries.
